Our exclusive guided launch trip is one of the best ways to experience the Abel Tasman National Park in a day. The trip is a private, fully guided scenic trip with the opportunity for easy walking on the Abel Tasman track, and can be from 3 - 6 hours.
We explore the golden sand beaches, rocky coastlines and tranquil inlets on our 8.5m fast launch, “Pearl Kaspar”. "Pearl Kaspar" enables you to see more of the park, being fast and able to travel into the various tidal lagoons at high tide, plus having a skipper and guide means that you can walk sections of the track while the boat repositions and waits for you and your guide at the other end of your chosen walk. Our skipper Kelvin is a character, and has spent many years working and running businesses in the Abel Tasman and designed “Pearl Kaspar” especially his own use in the Abel Tasman National park. He and your guide have a wealth of knowledge on the area and it's history along with a few of the stories of local identities (some truer than others!)
The trip includes our guide collecting you from your lodge and return, plus walking and activity tailored to the interests and fitness of clients and a delightful picnic lunch prepared by our inhouse cafe, Broccoli Row,on comfortable beach chairs under a sun umbrella on a quiet beach.
If you wish, our guide can also provide for sea kayaking a section of the park during the day. (At extra cost)
Typical Itinerary
After being picked up from your accommodation around 9:30am we meet our launch and skipper in Stephens Bay near Kaiteriteri. We head north up the coastline past Kaiteriteri, Split Apple Rock and Marahau to where the National Park begins. We are never very far from the coastline from here, as we cruise past beautiful beaches, islands, rocky outcrops, estuaries and a marine reserve. We will leave the boat and walk along a section of the Abel Tasman track which runs along the coast through lovely native forest. Next it's time to find a quiet beach to enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch for some relaxation, before maybe embarking on a couple of hours of sea kayaking or more exploring and walking. We return back to Stephens Bay and your guide will return you to your accommodation about 4:30pm.
Physical Expectation
This really is a trip for all levels of fitness as walking and other activities are entirely voluntary. Some agility is helpful when getting on and off the boat as there are no jetties so it is a case of getting your feet wet. Generally the sea is calm, but like everywhere the sea can get rough but we will manage the trip where we can to minimise any impact of this.
What you'll need
You should definitely bring a hat, sunscreen, camera, a jacket, suitable footwear for walking both on a well formed track and the beach (sandals are fine). Loose fitting trousers or shorts are useful for getting on and off the boat.
